You have heard of manual transmission and automatic transmission but what are CVT Transmissions and are they hard to repair?
CVT Transmission is the newest type of transmission. In general, there are three different types of transmissions, manual, automatic and the newest being CVT sometimes referred to as the shiftless transmissions. CVT Transmission is considered a type of automatic and stands for Continuously Variable Transmission. To get a better understanding of how a CVT Transmission works let’s first take a brief overview of manual and automatic transmissions. Manual transmission requires more work from the driver by manually operating a gear stick and clutch. This allows the driver to have more control, which some drivers prefer while others prefer automatic transmission which requires less work on the driver’s part. A CVT Transmission is a type of automatic transmission and its similarity is it doesn’t require any input from the driver.
CVT Transmissions instead of any gears has two pulleys with one pulley connecting to the engine and the other connecting to the wheels. The two pulleys are connected to a flexible belt. Although the pulley-based are the most common type of CVT Transmission there are
some other types which use rotating discs along with power rollers instead of the pulley system. CVT Transmission shifts seamlessly through a range of gears ratios and operates more smoothly than other transmissions.
Some of the common problems you may have with a CVT Transmission include slipping, overheating, shuddering and a sudden loss of acceleration. CVT’s can be expensive to replace or repair when compared to a regular automatic transmission. Overall, the CVT is susceptible to all the same problems as other automatic transmissions and requires a trained technician to perform any maintenance, repairs or replacement.
