How does my transmission work?

A transmission has 4 main components:

1) Transmission Housing

The transmission housing is the bell-shaped exterior of the transmission that protects the transmission gears. The transmission is commonly located on the side of the engine. Connected to the transmission is the main shaft, counter shaft, and an idler shaft.

2) Transmission Gears

The gears control how fast or slow the tires rotate on the axel and create torque, regardless of manual transmission or automatic transmission.

3) Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is a critical part of a transmission. It is necessary for the operation of the transmission gears. Typically, transmission fluid red, so that you will see the fluid if it leaks.

4) Transmission Filter

A transmission filter is simply like any filter. It keeps transmission fluid clean, so that does not get contaminated. It is a critical part of a transmission performance!

Do I have to have my transmission repaired at a transmission shop?

You should not attempt to fix your transmission unless you are a professional and have the required equipment to do so. A transmission is complex and it is necessary to have experience and knowledge of transmission, not the mention of the expensive tools that it requires. It is much easier to bring your car to an experienced and trustworthy transmission expert like Eagle Transmission. What transmission repair can I check on my own?

While it is necessary the bring a transmission to get repaired, there are minor repairs that you can check on your own. Most people prefer to just bring their car to the mechanic to get checked, but here are a few things you can check on your own if you want to. First, check to see if your transmission fluid is leaking. Second, check your transmission filter.

The transmission fluid should be changed at least twice a year. When transmission fluid gets too low level it can damage your transmission and become expensive damage to repair. If your transmission fluid is frequently low, you should check for a leak. Leaks are commonly found at the drain hole beneath the transmission, between the engine and transmission, in your radiator fluid, at the base of the filler tube, on the selector shaft, or the speed sensor mounting point. Take note: transmission fluid is red to make it easier to spot.

A transmission filter is a cheaper transmission repair and it is relatively easy to replace. As mention earlier, the transmission filter is a critical part of transmission performance. You can check to see that it is not clogged or damaged before bringing it to a transmission professional like Eagle Transmission Shop.
