Most auto supplier shelves are loaded with transmission additives claiming to be a “fix all” solution for transmissions that’s been neglected from lack of maintenance. Let’s be honest. There are no transmission additives out on the market that can take the place of preventive maintenance. You can’t expect transmission additives to make up for lack of proper maintenance or fix a broken transmission. Repairing a transmission problem requires a proper diagnosis by scanning the computer, performing a road test and inspection of the pan by removing it.
There are limited benefits offered by using transmission additives but for vehicles in certain weather conditions or performing certain tasks it could be beneficial. Vehicles operating in temperature extremes can benefit from transmission additives. Additives are known to help manage heat which is an enemy of transmissions. Vehicles that are involved in towing heavy loads or racing often are hard on transmissions which often generates excessive heat. Due to the level of stress these vehicles are under they often can benefit from using transmission additives.
Why Do Cars Need Automatic Transmission Fluid?
In an automatic transmission, the transmission fluid lubricates the bearings and metal parts inside the manual gearbox and
prevents them from grinding down as they move. Automatic transmissions fluid also provides friction and hydraulic pressure to make the internal parts operate correctly and helps to keep the temperature in the transmission cool. Most vehicles are used for everyday activities such as taking the kids to school, travelling back and forth to the workplace or shopping and do not require any transmission additives.
Transmission fluid along is recommended by the manufacturers to be enough transmission protection for these simple activities. There should be no need for a transmission additive if there is enough transmission fluid in the vehicle and the transmission fluid is changed when it’s dirty.
Please note that most vehicle owner manuals states, do not use cleaners, supplemental oil additives, or other treatment that could lead to damage that is not covered by manufacturer's warranty. Using an additive can be harmful to your transmission and could void the vehicles warranty.
