The transmission solenoid works by using the power supplied by the transmission controller. The computer of the transmission sends out commands to the transmission solenoid. Solenoids take that command to direct transmission fluid to either the valves or the clutch, which allows it to control the gears when to shift appropriately. The typical solenoid is made of nine parts. The nine parts are a valve body, an inlet port, an outlet port, a coil body, a coil winding, a plunger/piston, an orifice, a spring, and lead wires. All nine parts must work together for transmission to function properly. If one of the nine parts is not working properly then it will cause a problem with the transmission.
Common Problems with Transmission Solenoids
Problems with a solenoid can cause a delay in shifting, the delay ranging from a few seconds to over a minute. Transmission shifting in the incorrect gear is also a common problem when there is an issue with the solenoid. The transmission can refuse to downshift, so instead of automatically downshifting, it may be out of control or not work at all.
