Does your vehicle feel like it is kicking when you shift? Think you are experiencing a shifting problem? Keep reading to find out if your transmission is kicking and possible reasons why it is.
A kicking or jerking feeling when you shift is one of the most common symptoms of a transmission problem. It can make shifting very difficult. Problems with shifting your vehicle can most likely mean that there is an issue with your transmission. But, what is the cause of difficulty shifting?
Why is My Transmission Kicking?
Inadequate Amount of Transmission Fluid—
A common reason for transmission problems, such as transmission kicking, is due to an insufficient amount of transmission fluid. Transmission fluid can get old and dirty and require the fluid to get replaced or flushed. When transmission fluid is low or old it can overheat and no longer be effective. If the fluid is oxidized it will not cool or lubricate the transmission like it is supposed to.
To resolve this issue, your vehicle may require a transmission flush and a filter replacement. That is if your transmission is spared from major damage. Don’t delay in getting your transmission inspected if it has signs of a problem, such as kicking, jerking, or difficulty shifting.
Problem with Vacuum Lines—
Sometimes the issue can be attributed to a problem with the vacuum lines. Problems can involve a vacuum hose that is clogged, leaking, or loose. If this happens it can affect the pressure in the transmission, which results in a transmission problem and cause difficulty shifting. This may be the blame for your kicking transmission.
Sensor Issues—
Other times the issue may be a sensor-related problem. Sensors are designed to send and receive signals from the internal computer system. If one of the sensors accountable for changing gears in the transmission is malfunctioning, then it could cause the transmission to kick when shifting.
