To keep you safe on the road, it is important for you brakes to properly work and have regular maintenance. Avoiding regular brake maintenance or wearing out brake pads too much may result in a unfortunate situations. If you have signs of your brakes squeaking, grinding or experience problems when you brake, then bring your car in ASAP to get it checked by a mechanic.
1. Replace worn out brake pads and rotors
Regularly check your brake pads or rotors. It is something that can easily be checked at home. Worn down brake pads should never be put off from getting replaced. Although rotors don’t need to be replaced as often as brake pads they still need to be replaced over a period of time. An over-worn brake pad that doesn’t get replaced and begins to hit metal to metal could result in bad damage for brakes. Generally, brakes pad should be replaced somewhere between 25,000-75,000 miles, but it depends on all factors.
2.Get a brake flush often
The recommended amount of time for a brake flush is every 30,000 miles. Over time brake fluid can get dirty from regular use and the environment, just like engine oil and transmission fluid. A regular flush and replacement should keep your brake fluid clean and functional.
3.Bleed brake lines when needed
Even though bleeding brake lines is not needed as often as brake pads replacement, it should still be done every couple of years or so. Bleeding brakes lines is performed to get rid of any air pockets within your brake system. A soft or spongy brake petal could be a sign that you need to get your brakes serviced to bleed your brakes.
4.Be aware of how you drive
To keep your brake system working its best, be aware of how you are using your brakes. Don’t overuse your brakes or rest on the brake while driving. Limit hauling heavy loads and driving your brakes on steep inclines.
