What is a drivetrain and how does it work? A drivetrain in a car includes all the components necessary to make your vehicle move by transferring the engine’s energy to its wheels. The term “powertrain” and “driveline” are often used interchangeably as the drivetrain because it incorporates the drivetrain. The drivetrain usually includes a group of components that collaborate with the engine to move various parts including the wheels of the car to set it into motion. The drivetrain includes the differential, driveshaft, transmission, axles, CV joints and the wheels.
The term “drivetrain” usually has to do with the components that transfer power to the wheels from the engine making the transmission a part of the drivetrain. The main function of the transmission is to keep the wheels turning in time with the engine and the drivetrain’s main function is to convey power from the engine through the transmission to the wheels.
To allow the system to operate the drivetrain consists of a few components.
The drive shaft also refers to as a propellor shaft or prop shaft is a part of the vehicles drive train. It delivers torque from the transmission to the differential. From there it transfers this torque to the wheels.
The U-joint, also known as a universal joint connects to yokes that allows drive shafts as vehicles go over dips and bumps.
CV Joints or constant velocity joints are designed to bend in any direction which allows the shafts to rotate freely within a certain range.
Axle shafts are a rod or shaft that supports the car’s weight and rotates the wheels. Axles are critical to vehicles’ drive ability since they deliver power to your wheels.
