The differential is a component of gears in your vehicle that is designed to control wheel speed and traction while making a turn. A basis differential allows the wheels on the inside to make a smooth turn, while the wheels on the outside rotate faster. The way that a differential works can vary among each vehicle and some differentials have extra functions.
Where Is the Differential Located?
Vehicles either have a front differential, rear differential, or both. If it is a front-wheel-drive it has a front differential, and if it is a rear-wheel-drive it has a rear differential. Four-wheel drive has both a front differential and rear differential.
Four Types of Differentials
1.The Open Differential
The open differential is considered a basis differential. It is responsible for controlling individual wheel speed.
2.The Limited Slip Differential
The limited slip differential has a similar function as the open differential. The main difference is that it transfers torque to each individual wheel. This means that a limited slip differential has enough force to power through hard turns without your tires slipping..
3.The Locking Differential
The locking differentials are usually used in off-road vehicles that have a fixed axle. This allows the vehicle to have great traction and supply the same amount of power to each wheel.
4.The Torque Vectoring Differential (or Active Differential)
The torque vectoring differential includes electronic features and sensors. These advanced features supply the differential with car data and road data to determine the adjustments needed.
Regardless of the type of differential that you have, it is important for them to receive differential maintenance. Maintenance is a great preventative. If your vehicle is due for a maintenance service, don’t wait any longer by bringing your vehicle in for regular maintenance.
