What is a CVT Transmission?

What exactly is a CVT Transmission? A CVT Transmission, also known as a continuously variable transmission, changes through an unending range of effective gear ratios seamlessly while you drive. Since a CVT is a type of automatic transmission there is not that much difference between the two compared to the major difference between an automatic transmission and a manual transmission. A vehicle that has a CVT transmission is lighter than a traditional automatic transmission, and this combined with the smoother operation, helps improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles that have a CVT. Vehicles with a CVT can shift seamlessly and maintain constant RPM regardless of different speeds. 

What are Some CVT Transmission Problems?

Overall, CVTs offer a smoother ride than a similar car with a regular transmission because the transmission never shifts. Some drivers miss the lack of upshifting and downshifting of gears. The lack of fixed gears makes the ride less engaging for some sporter drivers.

CVTs sound different from other transmissions. You may hear squealing or a hissing type of sound for a few seconds after shifting into any gear and is a normal operating characteristic. Also, a droning and whining noise at certain speeds may be present. These sounds are all common operating characteristics of a CVT transmission. 

CVT’s systems are more costly than other transmission systems. When compared to a conventional automatic transmission, CVTs can be expensive to repair or replace. Like any transmission, CVTs are susceptible to leaks at the gaskets and seals due to overuse, overheating and just normal wear and tear.
