A torque converter is a doughnut-shaped internal engine component directly connected between the transmission and the engine. The manual transmission has a clutch that connects the engine to the transmission which is important because without it you couldn’t stop your car without the engine possibly stalling. Automatic transmissions do not have a clutch, they have a torque converter whose role is similar to a manual transmission clutch.
A torque converter is a type of fluid coupling that allows the engine to spin independently of the transmission somewhat. When your vehicle is idling, only a small amount of torque goes through the converter which keeps you from having to press down hard on the brake pedal to keep the vehicle from moving. When starting to accelerate from a complete stop, for instance, a light turns to green and you start to accelerate, you must press harder to start accelerating but once your vehicle is in motion the engine speeds up and pumps more fluid into the torque converter which results in more torque being transmitted to the vehicle wheels.
Efficient – Clutches versus Torque Converters
An automatic transmission ultimately is not as efficient as a manual transmission. The engine and torque converter almost move at the same speed at high speeds; however, it would be ideal for both the manual and automatic transmission to move at the same speed.
What is a Lockup Clutch?
When the driving conditions of the car reach a set target, the lockup clutch locks them together creating a direct drive from the engine to the transmission. This function aids the car’s performance and efficiency. A lockup torque converter is used to offer fluid economy.
Symptoms of a Bad Torque Converter
Symptoms of a bad torque converter can manifest in many ways. Here are a few: Loss of acceleration, transmission fluid leak, overheating, slipping between gears, won’t shift into gears, won’t shift at all, and bad transmission fluid.
