With the complexity of transmissions comes the fact that there are many scenarios of a transmission needing a repair. Some parts in the transmission are more common to need a repair over time than other parts. While some transmission problems can go back to neglecting transmission maintenance, such as not replacing dirty transmission fluid.
Transmission Fluid is a Common Reason for Most Transmission Repairs
A common reason for transmission repairs can be related to the transmission fluid needing to be replaced. Transmission fluid can become very dirty and contaminated if it is always neglected and never maintained. In other scenarios, the transmission fluid can be low, which can cause transmission parts to malfunction or the whole transmission to overheat.
Typically, low transmission fluid means that there is a leak. Transmission fluid is different than engine oil. The main difference is transmission fluid is in an enclosed reservoir and is not designed to burn up like engine oil.
If low transmission fluid does not result in additional problems with the transmission, then it may be as simple as replacing an external seal. Sometimes it is not as easy to fix complete a reseal if the seal is located on the front of the transmission which would require the transmission to be removed from underneath the vehicle.
Check your transmission fluid regularly. The transmission fluid should be a red color; a brown or black color means the fluid is dirty or burning up. If you notice that you have a red-like color fluid under your parked vehicle then it may be leaking. Best to address the leaking transmission fluid before it gets too low.
Lots of Common Transmission Repairs are Minor Ones
A transmission repair does not always mean a major repair that will require a large expense. Lots of transmission repairs are fairly minor repairs. One of the main factors that can determine if you have a major vs minor repair is if the transmission will need to be removed from the vehicle.
Repairs that can be performed while the transmission remains installed in the vehicle are usually considered minor transmission repairs. So, if the part(s) that are needing replacement are accessible it means they can be replaced while the transmission is in the vehicle. While the inaccessible parts will require the transmission to be removed.
Just because numerous transmission repairs are minor does not mean that there are not unfortunate cases of severely damaged transmissions. Major transmission repair might need a full transmission overhaul. In a transmission overhaul, the transmission is fully disassembled and restored. Parts that are damaged or worn will be replaced.
