The Difference between a Transmission Problem and Other Car Problems
Figuring out the cause of your transmission problem is not always easy to find. Transmissions are made up of several components. Those components can cause a transmission problem if there is a malfunction. Just like other sections of a car, such as an engine, you have to rely on are numerous parts to function correctly and do their job. Those different functions can be thrown off by just a single part. So, how do you know if your vehicle is having a regular car problem or transmission problem?
Understand the Purpose of the Transmission
Obliviously, the first definite way to know if you’re having a transmission problem is if the problem affects the transmission. To know if a transmission has a problem, it is important to understand the purpose of the transmission. A transmission’s purpose is to transfers power from the vehicle’s engine to the wheels by way of the drivetrain and axles. This means when you are shifting gear, it is changing the gears in the transmission.
Signs of a Transmission Problem
Trouble Shifting Gears—
A sign of a transmission problem is commonly noticed when changing gears. Shifting gears is supposed to be a smooth process, if it is hard to shift or gives any resistance then there may be a transmission problem.
Strange Noises—
Strange noises, like grinding or clunking, are also common signs to be aware of. Though it can be hard to distinguish the difference between a problem with the transmission or the engine from their noises alone.
Slipping Out of Gear—
Sometimes the problem is not as much hard shifting, but rather, the transmission slipping out of gear. These are all signs of a transmission problem. If your vehicle is slipping or grinding, it needs to be brought to a transmission shop. Transmission problems can take you by surprise and can be very dangerous.
Low or Old Transmission Fluid—
Many problems with the transmission have to do with transmission fluid. Such a simple component of the transmission though of extreme importance. Transmission fluid keeps the transmission and its parts lubricated. Without proper lubrication, the transmission parts are not able to function smoothly. Any signs of leaking transmission fluid mean that there is a problem. Also, if the transmission fluid hasn’t been changed in a long time, it might have old transmission fluid that needs to be replaced.
